TOMS Shoes: Buy A Shoe, Give A Shoe

TOMS Shoes

I’m pretty slow when it comes to certain things, especially regarding fashion. In the past couple years, I’ve rarely kept up with trends unless it was around the same time I needed a major update. This time around, my shoes are wearing thin and so I’m been poking around online to find shoes that not only look cool but are also friendlier either to the environment and to the people who are involved with the manufacturer. This is where I stumbled upon TOMS.

TOMS Shoes provides a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes purchased. A pretty great cause if you ask me, especially since so many kids don’t have shoes. Shoes also provide so much more than simply protection from the elements. A new pair shoes boosts anyone’s confidence regardless of who you are, where you’re from, and how much you make. The shoes themselves are lightweight canvas slip-ons inspired by the shoes worn by Argentine farmers and have a one hundred year history behind them.

While October may not be the ideal season for these shoes, keep them in mind. For those in perpetually hot climates, they may be the shoe for you, but for us here in the temperate North East, they are perfect for wearing around the house, running errands, or my favorite, as gifts for the little ones just learning to walk. I can’t wait to get a pair for my nephew (yes, they even have tiny TOMS).

If you’re interested in TOMS as more than a shoe, check out Treehugger’s recent run of podcasts (Part One and Part Two) where they interviewed the creator, Blake Mycoskie.
